"So what about wheatgrass, are there any benefits in swallowing a shot of green grass juice every day?
Wheatgrass, discovered in the US in the 1930’s, is thought to be responsible for the improvement of various health conditions. Wheatgrass is said to boost the body’s ability to cleanse and rebuild the blood, improve the immune system, assist with anti-ageing, improve liver function and alleviate skin disorders.
Wheatgrass has been shown to contain antioxidants, to be high in minerals and vitamins, including vitamin K, which helps the absorption of calcium, to be high in chlorophyll, which is believed to increase the heart function and regenerate the liver, and to be high in protein.
Melbourne-based GP Dr Chris Reynolds, whose passion for practising medicine was reignited 10 years ago after witnessing the healing abilities of wheatgrass, has dedicated the past decade to learning more about its medicinal properties.
“I think it’s an immuno-modulator, and it boosts the immune system when it’s needed,” Dr Reynolds says.
He has found wheatgrass to be successful in the treatment of ailments including psoriasis, eczema, soft tissue problems, shingles, inflammatory problems and burns, and says that he finds it less necessary to prescribe antibiotics.
“I don’t use antibiotics unless I have to,” he says. “Of course, there is still a need for antibiotics, and often I use the conventional medicine in combination with wheatgrass.”
Dr. Sandra Cabot, author of Raw Juices Can Save Your Life (WHAS) believes grass juice is an important ingredient in a healthy, varied juicing program.
“I would say that you need a variety of things (for ailments),” Dr Cabot says. “If you wanted to use wheatgrass, some of the advantages are that it could help people who have heavy periods, or it could help energy levels if you have chronic fatigue. But you’ll get the best results if you use a wide variety of fruits and vegetables.
According to Dr Cabot, juicing is a highly effective method of giving the body an instant hot of concentrated antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, which tablet forms can’t compete with.
“Juicing will give you unique antioxidant properties that you cannot simulate in a pill,” Dr Cabot says.
“For example,” she adds, “the pigments in fruits and vegetables are concentrated in your juice, and these pigments are powerful anti-inflammatories.”
While anecdotal evidence hailing the healing qualities of wheatgrass is strong, to date, actual scientific support is limited.
Dr Stanton acknowledges that the use of wheatgrass is safe, but warns against relying on it as a cure-all for serious illness. “I don’t think it is harmful,” she says. “However I do object to people getting false hope if they’ve got some serious health problem and they think wheatgrass will fix it. We just don’t have that evidence.”
the science behind it
Dr Reynolds agrees there’s still much to be learned about wheatgrass. And although chlorophyll is widely touted as being the active healing ingredient in wheatgrass, Reynolds believes the crucial factor is something else yet to be identified. ‘There is something happening (in wheatgrass), that’s all I’m saying. I’m not saying what’s happening, but it’s important.”
Dr Kotsirilos is looking forward to the results of some pending research. “If there’s no (scientific) research it doesn’t mean (wheatgrass) is not working, it just means we need more research, At this stage I know there are some good cases for it, and wheatgrass is generally thought of as safe. Once we’ve got the scientific research we can start to promote it a bit more.”
Scientific research into the benefits of wheatgrass is increasing. A recent study into the serious blood disorders thalassemia, which inhibits oxygen in the blood, by Professor Panos Ioannou at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Melbourne, found using wheatgrass extract substantially boosted production of foetal haemoglobin, which is very high in oxygen compared to adult haemoglobin.
“According to Professor Ioannou, the activity of the wheatgrass and its ability induce foetal haemoglobin was far in advance of any of the pharmaceuticals available, and there are no side effects,” says Dr Reynolds. “What we’re trying to do now is locate the actual molecule or molecules in wheatgrass that are responsible for this activity. That’s the next stage of the research,” he adds.
Next time you take a swig of the green, you could be stumbling upon valuable health benefits. At least you won’t be doing yourself any harm. But of course, just one shot won’t do the trick, as with anything, regular intake is the key.
The bottom line is, whether it be herbs, wheatgrass or another form of natural medicine, there’s still no quick fix, but a properly designed and diligently followed natural therapy may provide you with the solution to your health problem.
